Lathe

A 20-module mastering chain with loudness metering, stem separation and a text prompt.

Lathe is a mastering Audio Unit with 20 processing modules in a chain you reorder by dragging. An analysis assistant compares your track with a genre target or a reference and sets up a starting chain. Every module also installs as its own Audio Unit, and the bundle adds a channel strip, a tonal balance meter and a reference capture tool, 24 plug-ins in all.

What it does

  • A chain you reorder by dragging

21 slots hold 20 modules, with two independent equalizers. Each has power, solo, delta listening, presets and a difference meter. Latency stays constant when you switch a module off.

  • A starting chain from analysis

The assistant measures tonal balance, width, microdynamics, loudness and vocal level against a genre target or a reference's loudest 8 seconds. Then it sets EQ, imaging, dynamics and limiter.

  • Stem separation on your Mac

A four-stem model splits a finished mix into vocals, drums, bass and other on the CPU. The chain or a stem EQ can then work on one stem.

  • Describe the master in words

Type 'loud club master, tight mono low end, less harsh highs' and Apple's on-device language model turns it into settings. The result is one undo step.

  • Limiter, meters and dither

Six limiter modes with true-peak limiting and soft clip. Meters read RMS, peak, K-System, loudness and true peak, and dither runs from 24 down to 8 bits.

  • References and codec preview

Load up to 10 reference tracks with level matching. Hear your master as AAC or simulated MP3 at eight bit rates from 96 to 320 kbps.

Good to know

  • On-device prompts need macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon with Apple Intelligence. Otherwise the prompt assistant needs your own Anthropic API key.
  • Stem separation adds about half a second of latency while it is on.
  • The MP3 preview is a simulation. The AAC preview uses Apple's encoder.

System requirements

  • macOS 11 or later
  • Apple silicon or Intel Mac
  • Formats: AU
  • A host that loads Audio Units or VST3 plug-ins, for the plug-in versions

Network access

Apart from the licence check, it connects only to these, and only for the feature named:

  • Anthropic's API, only if you add your own key for the cloud prompt assistant
