Twinpane

A keyboard-driven file manager with two panels, a directory tree and function keys

Twinpane runs in two modes on a text-screen grid. Cmd-1 opens two file panels with a command line and an F1-F10 key bar. Cmd-2 switches to a directory tree, where you tag files across folders and copy, move or delete them all at once.

What it does

  • Two panels and a command line

    Two-panel mode has a command line, a clickable F1-F10 key bar, a pull-down menu on F9, a user menu on F2 and a file viewer on F3.

  • Mark files without the mouse

Mark files with Insert, Space or Shift-arrows. The plus, minus and asterisk keys select and deselect whole groups.

  • The tools sit on single keys

Info panel, quick view, Find File, directory compare, panel swap and volume selection each have a key. Ctrl-F3 to F7 switch between five sort orders.

  • A directory tree with a file window

Tree mode draws the folders with box-drawing branches, next to a file window and a disk statistics column. A filespec filter decides which files show.

  • Tag once, act on everything

Tag single files, all files, an inverted selection or the whole tree. Then copy, move, delete, rename or change attributes on every tagged file. Whole branches move or go away with one command.

  • Deletes go to the Trash

Shift-F8 deletes permanently when you mean it. F1 shows the full key reference in either mode.

Good to know

  • On laptop keyboards you hold fn to reach the function keys. The key bar in two-panel mode also takes clicks.
  • Twinpane works with files on your Mac and mounted volumes. It has no FTP client and does not open archives.

System requirements

  • macOS 13 or later
