Bitling

Four emulated 8-bit sound chips in one plug-in, playing up to 16 sounds at once

Bitling emulates four 8-bit home-computer sound chips per instance. Each chip has three oscillator channels and a sample-noise channel, so up to 16 sounds play at once. Filters, LFOs, looping envelopes and a 16-step wavetable sit on top, with 126 factory patches and 8 kits.

What it does

  • The chip, modelled down to its registers

A 24-bit phase accumulator, a 16-bit frequency register at PAL or NTSC clock and a 23-bit noise LFSR. The envelope generator keeps its original delay quirk.

  • Waveforms of both chip revisions

Triangle, saw, pulse and noise, plus the combined waveforms of both revisions. Ring modulation and hard sync work as on the chip.

  • A filter on every channel

Each channel has its own low-, band- or high-pass filter with resonance up to 127, plus volume and balance. Every chip has its own stereo output.

  • Modulation per patch

    4 LFOs, 4 eight-point looping envelopes, 8 combiners and a 9-destination matrix. 8 macros are host-automatable.

  • 16-step wavetable for drums and chords

Each patch steps through a 16-step wavetable for drums, arpeggio chords and attack transients. Multi, Poly and Unison modes, glide and a 5-mode arpeggiator cover the rest.

  • Sample-noise kits

The fourth channel plays samples with 4-bit volume-register synthesis, in kits of 16 keys. Patch memory holds 64 kits.

Good to know

  • The combined waveforms and filter curves are modelled, not sampled from real chips, so the emulation is not bit-exact.
  • Each chip channel plays one note. For chords from one MIDI channel, set a chip to Poly mode.

System requirements

  • macOS 11 or later
  • Apple silicon or Intel Mac
  • Formats: AU, VST3, Standalone
  • A host that loads Audio Units or VST3 plug-ins, for the plug-in versions
