Canticle

Four-part formant and FM synth that sings vowels, breathes and speaks words

Canticle builds each voice from 8 voiced and 8 noise-band operators on 88 algorithms, and the voiced operators can take a formant shape. Formant sequences make it speak, scat or sing like a choir, and Import Audio turns your own recording into a new sequence. The library holds 395 performances, 1,409 voices and 90 formant sequences.

What it does

  • Four parts sharing 32 voices

Each part has its own MIDI channel range, key and velocity ranges, mono or poly mode and portamento. Insertion parts can go to their own stereo output.

  • Voiced and noise operators

Voiced operators have 8 spectral forms, one of them a formant. Unvoiced operators produce bands of noise for breath and consonants.

  • 90 formant sequences

Spoken words, scat, choirs, beats and arpeggios are built in. Import Audio turns a recording into a formant sequence you can play.

  • 87 effects

Canticle has 17 reverbs, 29 variation effects and 41 insertion effects, plus a three-band EQ on the master.

  • SysEx in FS1R and DX7 format

Import and export SysEx in FS1R format, and import DX7 single voices and 32-voice banks. A bank manager keeps your own banks.

  • Morph between four voices

A morph square blends four corner voices per part at an X/Y position you can automate. 3,134 parameters are open to host automation.

Good to know

  • Words come from the 90 factory formant sequences or from recordings you import. Canticle has no text-to-speech input.
