Swingboat

One LFO drives tremolo, vibrato and auto-pan together, up to ring-mod rates.

Swingboat runs one LFO into three linked modulators: amplitude for tremolo, pitch for vibrato and stereo rotation for auto-pan. The rate goes from 0.01 to 60 Hz, and a multiplier takes it up to x100. Host sync locks the cycle to the song position, and 20 factory presets ship with it.

Swingboat playing the Rotary Fast preset: one sine LFO at 6.70 Hz driving AM depth, FM depth with a 90 degree phase and a 140 degree stereo rotation, with output meters at about -5 dB

What it does

  • Five waveforms, up to ring-mod rates

Choose square, triangle, saw up, saw down or sine. The x0.25 to x100 multiplier pushes the LFO to ring-mod rates.

  • Vibrato that holds its depth

At 100% depth, FM moves the pitch about one semitone up and down at any LFO rate. A Hermite-interpolated modulated delay does the work.

  • Stereo rotation on a sphere

Drag on the rotation sphere to set the centre between -180 and 180 degrees, with a range of 1 to 360 degrees. The rotation keeps the energy constant.

  • Phase offsets for tremolo and vibrato

Set AM and FM to 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees against the LFO, so level and pitch move together or out of step.

  • Locked to the song position

With sync on, the LFO runs one cycle per beat times the multiplier, and its phase follows the song position.

  • Presets, A/B and undo

20 factory presets, your own presets, A/B setups with copy, undo and redo, and a 75 to 200% interface. Changes are smoothed over 20 ms, so they don't click.

  • The Sync Chopper 1-16 preset: sync on Auto, multiplier x4.00, square wave, AM depth at 100 and FM and rotation switched off
Chopping in time with the song: with sync on, the LFO runs one cycle per beat times the multiplier, so x4 gates the signal in sixteenths and follows the song position.
  • The Underwater preset: LFO at 2.20 Hz, AM depth 40 with phase 180, FM depth 85 with phase 270, rotation on with a 90 degree range
Moving level and pitch out of step: AM and FM each take a phase of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees against the LFO. Underwater sets them 90 degrees apart.
  • The Wide Auto-Pan preset: LFO at 0.50 Hz, AM and FM off, rotation centred at 0 with a range of 180 degrees and the needle at the right edge of the sphere
Panning across the stereo field: the rotation sphere sets a centre from -180 to 180 degrees and a range of 1 to 360 degrees, and the energy stays constant as the sound turns.
  • Setup B holding the Ring Mod Bell preset: LFO at 6.00 Hz times x50.00, AM depth at 100, mix at 70 and the B to A copy button in the top bar
Comparing two sounds with A/B: Setup B holds Ring Mod Bell, where the x50 multiplier pushes the LFO to 300 Hz for ring modulation. One click switches back to A.
