Chanterelle

Type lyrics, draw a melody, and a generated singer sings it in time with your DAW

Chanterelle sings melodies with lyrics you type, in nine languages, in time with your DAW. Its 20 factory singers are generated from 29 traits and are not recorded from or modelled on any real person. You can blend singers, stack a choir of 16 or describe a new voice in words.

What it does

  • Lyrics in nine languages

English uses a 134,000-word pronouncing dictionary plus spelling rules. German, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese work too, and you can edit phonemes per note.

  • Describe a voice in words

Type 'a smoky, tired jazz alto' and a network on your Mac designs the voice. It runs without network access.

  • Blend singers or stack a choir

Mix up to four singers with separate timbre and style weights, or morph to a second voice along an automation lane. The unison choir holds up to 16 singers.

  • A piano roll for singing

Type lyrics inline, draw pitch with a pen and set pitch anchors. Vibrato, consonant length and retake are set per note, next to 11 expression lanes.

  • Play it live from MIDI

Each key sings the next syllable of your lyric text, mono with legato or as chords. One singer uses about 0.5 % of one CPU core, sixteen about 5.6 %.

  • Bring in a melody you already have

Import MIDI, MusicXML or UFDATA with lyrics, or a sung or hummed recording in WAV, AIFF, FLAC or MP3. Export MIDI and UFDATA, or render WAV.

Good to know

  • Diction is limited. When a speech recogniser transcribes the singing, it gets 34 to 48 % of the words right, depending on the voice.
  • The voices come from formant synthesis. Chanterelle does not clone voices and does not use neural rendering.

System requirements

  • macOS 11 or later
  • Apple silicon or Intel Mac
  • Formats: AU, VST3, Standalone
  • A host that loads Audio Units or VST3 plug-ins, for the plug-in versions
