Chordwright

Store a chord on every key, turn it into step patterns and see what to play next.

Chordwright sits in front of your instrument and turns single keys into chords and chords into patterns. It holds 128 chords, one per key, and 12 arp patterns per preset with 11 step graphs each. A theory assistant names what you play by Roman numeral and function and suggests the next chord with the reason it works.

What it does

  • Up to 16 notes on every key

Memory mode stores a chord on each of 128 keys. 8 voice slots scale velocity from 0 to 200%, and a per-voice lock holds pedal tones.

  • Three chord modes

Use memory mode, parallel mode with one shape on every key, or diatonic one-finger chords from triads to 13ths in the key you choose.

  • 11 step graphs for polymeter

Each pattern has graphs for note, random select, octave, pitch, velocity, gate, timing, harmony, tie, ratchet and chance. Give each graph its own length.

  • Arp rates from 16 bars to 1/512

Sync the arp to the host or run it free in Hz. Strum, humanize, inversions, 6 voicings and automatic voice leading shape the chords it plays.

  • Theory assistant and 14 lessons

Build chords from 32 qualities, 36 progression templates and 17 scales and modes on an interactive circle of fifths. The lessons run from intervals to voice leading and arp design.

  • Drag the result into your DAW

Drag a chord or a rendered 1-bar pattern onto a track. Chordwright also imports and exports MIDI files and .chords files.

Good to know

  • Chordwright outputs MIDI only. You need an instrument after it to hear anything.
  • Most DAWs need its MIDI output routed to an instrument track. In Logic Pro, load the AU MIDI FX version in the MIDI FX slot.

System requirements

  • macOS 11 or later
  • Mac with Apple silicon
  • Formats: AU, VST3, Standalone
  • A host that loads Audio Units or VST3 plug-ins, for the plug-in versions
