Marquetry

Eight-part synth and sampler with four layers per patch, 92 effects and 401 patches

Marquetry plays 8 parts at once, each with its own MIDI channel, key range and velocity range, through a mixer with 4 aux sends and 8 stereo outputs. Every patch stacks 4 layers built from 644 wavetables, 156 multisampled sources or your own samples. It comes with 92 effect units, a 32-step arpeggiator and 401 factory patches in 23 categories.

What it does

  • Four layers, four sources each

Each layer morphs up to 4 sound sources on an X/Y plane. Crossfade zones between layers follow a fader, the keyboard or velocity.

  • 644 wavetables, 156 multisampled sources

The morphing wavetables come from 161 tables in 11 categories, each in four variants. Drag in WAV, AIFF, FLAC or CAF files, or a whole multisample folder.

  • Dual filters with 68 algorithms

Run them in series or parallel, from 20 filter families. Each layer also has polyphonic granular, FM, ring modulation, waveshaping, crushing and a dual frequency shifter.

  • 92 effects, 48 modulation slots

Effect racks sit on each layer, the patch, the aux sends and the master, and every unit can be modulated. 8 LFOs and 12 looping breakpoint envelopes feed a 48-slot matrix.

  • Arpeggiator, XY pad and MPE

The 32-step arpeggiator has ratchets, slides, chords, strum and 31 pattern presets. The XY pad records motion, and MPE covers per-note bend, pressure and slide.

  • Keeps the last 60 seconds

An always-on recorder holds the last 60 seconds of audio and MIDI, including what you played before you thought to record.

  • The FX page with Layer A's rack holding Tilt EQ, Multi Chorus, Tape Echo and Shimmer Verb, the signal flow from layers A to D through Aux, Common and the multi racks to Master above
Building a layer rack: 4 effect units on Layer A only. Each layer, the patch aux and common racks, the 4 multi aux racks and the master hold 4 units each, chosen from 92.
  • The arpeggiator running Major Seven Cascade: mode Up, rate 1/8, chord Major 7, 2 octaves and 8 active steps with accents on steps 1 and 5
Playing the arpeggiator: Major Seven Cascade runs an 8-step pattern at 1/8 over 2 octaves. Patterns reach 32 steps with velocity, ratchets, slides and transposition per step.
  • The Vortex page of Orbital Bloom with the ball at X +0.55 and Y +0.35, and 4 of 16 slots sending X to A Shape and B Level, Y to Filter 1 Cutoff and the radius to Detune
Moving the Vortex: drag the ball and up to 16 slots follow. In Orbital Bloom, X morphs the timbre, Y opens the filters and the distance from the centre adds detune. RECORD captures the motion as a loop.
  • The patch browser with all 401 patches, the library directory, mood and keyword chips, Orbital Bloom selected with its tags and the Patch Lock buttons
Browsing 401 patches by library, mood or keyword. Patch Lock keeps 8 parts of the current sound, such as its filters or arpeggiator, while you try other patches.
